The obligation incumbent upon each of the two spouses is that they piously fear Allah and strive to properly fulfill their rights toward one another. However, in most cases, wives are often more vulnerable than men, and men are more likely to be unjust toward them and to fail in fulfilling their rights.
Allah has commanded men to behave kindly toward them, and this is also what the Messenger (may Allah send blessings and peace upon him) invited them to. Allah – the Most High – says in the Holy Qur’an (in the meaning of the following verse):
“And live with them in kindness.”
﴿وَعَاشِرُوهُنِّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ﴾
Thus, He has commanded men to be good to their wives.
