According to 'Abdallah Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father), the Prophet (Salla allah alayhi wa salam) said, "The thing for which zamzam water is drunk is answered." (Reported by Daraqoutni in his Sunnah n°2739 and authenticated by Sheikh Albani in Sahih Targhib Wa Tarhib n°1164.
According to Abu Dharr, the Prophet (Salla allah alayhi wa salam) said: "In Mecca, my ceiling was removed, Gabriel descended from it, opened my heart, washed it with the water of Zamzam and then brought a container filled with gold, wisdom and faith, poured it into my chest, closed it, grabbed my hand and took me up to the lowest heaven" (Al Boukhari).
Thus, the fact that the Prophet's (Salla allah alayhi wa salam) heart was washed with this water proves its purity.
