The Spirit of the Soul According to Al-Ghazali, Ibn Al-Jawzi and Ibn Qudamah - Tawbah Editions
Allah (Haza Wajal) said in what is the meaning of His Word: "He who was dead and whom We have brought back to life (by faith), attributing to him a light by which he walks among people, is he similar to the one who wanders in darkness without being able to get out? (Surah al-An’am, v.122).
He thus compared faith and Islam to the soul that gives life to the body, whoever is deprived of it is similar to the dead, even if he thinks he is alive.
Imam Al-Ghazali, may Allah cover him with His mercy, considered the condition of the Muslim community in his time and said: "As for the knowledge of the path leading to the hereafter, on which the pious predecessors walked, and which Allah (Haza Wajal) named in His Book as understanding (fiqh), wisdom, knowledge, radiance, light, guidance, and righteousness, it is ignored and completely forgotten. This is a disastrous cut made to the religion, and a dark misfortune. I considered it necessary to compose this important book in order to revive the sciences of the religion, unveil the ways of the past imams, and expose the splendors of the useful sciences of the prophets and pious predecessors." This marked the beginning of his monumental work: Revival of the Sciences of the Religion.
Although his work was controversial and criticized, scholars did not completely dismiss it, and many of them sought to purify it. Imam Ibn Al-Jawzi and Ibn Qudamah undertook this immense task, one after the other, to keep only the essence of it. While Al-Ghazali focused on showing what the soul of Islam and faith is, Ibn Al-Jawzi and Ibn Qudamah gave us access to the essence of the work: the spirit of the soul.
