There is no doubt that the human being is exposed to misfortunes and will inevitably face trials in this present life, among them the various illnesses that may affect him. But these are only tests coming from Allah—Exalted be He—and examinations from Him, so that the truthful believer, who shows patience and seeks reward from Him, may be distinguished from the hypocrite with weak faith, who becomes impatient and is displeased with what befalls him. During this test, the one who limits himself to treatments permitted by Allah—Praise be to Him, the Most High—will also be distinguished from those who attach no importance to this and seek cures through unlawful means without fearing for the corruption of their belief.
And indeed, during this trial each person will distinguish himself from the other. Yet the matter is more serious than it appears. For what is required first and foremost from a Muslim when he becomes ill is to know that it comes from Allah – praise be to Him, the Most High – and that he should not become impatient or show anger when it happens. Rather, what is required of him is to resort to the lawful treatment to heal himself, for Allah has given every illness a remedy...
